Copyright and What Animators Need to Know About It
HOT COCOA SHOW! This week we talk all about Copyright, Fair Use, Parody, Fan Art and more in a discussion that's centered around a blog post I made on the topic a couple days ago! Today is also our exact 2-year anniversary!! So it's a special day. But listen, because the copyright has been extended to such a degree that more of the art which is actually still relevant in our time is copyrighted (proportionate to in the past when the copyright term was much shorter), the risk of stepping into legal quicksand is actually even more probable now. More creators, being seen earlier in their careers than ever before, in a time of extended copyright on the pop culture that itself is uniquely used as a cultural reference point of expression... that's complicated!! I aim to make things clearer for you by making it clearer for my co-host Rob in this episode of the podcast.Listen for The Blob Blog, what started the hipsters hypothesis, "that's pathetic, bro" and Happy Birthday![audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/rubberonionpodcast-103-copyright_what_animators_need_to_know.mp3|titles=RubberOnion Animation Podcast - #103: "Copyright, and What Animators Need to Know About It"]

Triple Digits
This week's episode was LIVE and you listeners in the chatroom were amazing. We had animation news stories, trivia, Rapid Fire, audience voicemail, and a heartfelt goodbye from Pat who leaves the show as co-host to pursue his higher education and new career in Substance Abuse Counseling (contact him on Twitter if you or someone you know needs help). 99 Problems But This Show Ain't One
Richard Williams' is continuing his boundary pushing pursuits in hand-drawn animation with "Prologue," Moonbot shows how to make a perfect teaser, Danger Mouse is coming to the CBBC and Netflix... and since this is Pat's penultimate episode as a regular co-host on the show we surprise him with a countdown of his 5 most memorable moments as submitted by you listeners! Now as for NEXT WEEK, at 6:30pm ET on Sunday, September 27th we're having a special LIVE episode of the Podcast, complete with a chatroom where you can interact with us and other audience members. All that will be over at the RUBBERONION LIVE PAGE!And don't forget to RSVP at the FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE![audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep99-99_problems_but_this_show_aint_one.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #99: "99 Problems But This Show Ain't One"]

Cliffhanger
This week we saw Glen Keane (the master animator behind Ariel from "The Little Mermaid") draw in Virtual Reality, and then Batman et al beat up sea creatures (including Ariel) in the new Batmetal animated music video. We finally get to see what "Wabbit," Bugs Bunny's new series, will look like and learn about a Spongebob Squarepants musical and a possible Avengers-style teamup movie of your favorite 90s NickToons. These next two episodes are a little special, and not just because they precede our 100th episode LIVE show! With Stephen traveling this week, two episodes were recorded in one session. The split between them is a cliffhanger of epic proportions (I may be overselling that)! Enjoy and leave the evening of Sunday, September 27 open to join us for our 100th episode, LIVE![audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep98-cliffhanger.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #98: "Cliffhanger"]

How to Collaborate Effectively
This week Stephen and Rob tackle the question of "collaboration" and what that means for us animators. This topic seemed relevant since we're working on another Podcastimation for release at the end of the month in conjunction with our 100th episode. We cover some of the factors which go into finding someone to collaborate with, how to avoid some of the possible pitfalls like a difference in vision, and review examples of popular artistic collaborations. We want to know what you think... what makes for a truly effective collaboration? Have you ever been in one yourself? Share your comments, stories and suggestions in the comments section below and we'll read the best ones on next weeks' episode![audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep97-how_to_collaborate_effectively.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #97: "How to Collaborate Effectively"]

Nintendo No You Didn't
We're talking all Video Game related stories this week but start with a question: is "Animations" a word? Nintendo said they want more control over their movie properties, fan-film producer Adi Shankar (Judge Dredd: Superfiend, Power/Rangers) and Fred Seibert (Frederator) want to make a dark Castlevania animated mini-series, and Rovio cuts a third of their work force. This week we also play a game where Stephen reads out all the video game movies that have been made thus far and Rob and Pat try to guess what their Rotten Tomatoes rating is... I know this is cliche, but the answers may surprise you! The audience question this week is a great one about what animated series we would cancel in order to revive another.[audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep96-nintendo_no_you_didnt.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #96: "Nintendo No You Didn't"]

HBO No You Didn't
It was an interesting week to be a kid. While "Sesame Street" moves to HBO, "The Lion Guard" is coming to the small screen in a beautifully animated new series and Stephen saw a family-friendly animated short collection in a local theater, featuring the works of nine animators from around the world. If you happen to be an "adult-kid," the red-band trailer for "Hell & Back" was posted and the Hollywood Antitrust lawsuit is back in play... OK, this week's theme is stretched a little bit but it did lead to some VERY interesting discussions! There was technical talk over "The Lion Guard" animation style, social discussion over "Sesame Street" on a premium cable channel, and a bit of budget talk regarding the recommended reading this week (see below).[audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep95-hbo_no_you_didnt.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #95: "HBO No You Didn't"]

The Big D23
This weekend was Disney's D23 presentation so we discuss all the information that came out of that... live-action remakes, sequels, and the incredible line-up on Disney and Pixar animation film slate all the way to 2018! Stephen starts the show by giving a mini-review on the British re-dub of the Argentinian animated film "Metagol" (which in the UK is called "Unbeatables"), Rob tells a story about having poop on his shoe and Pat breaks some news. Then we're off talking about how Furries love Zootopia, why Cars 2 might get too much hate, if Donald Trump was producing the upcoming Dia de los Muertos inspired Pixar movie "Coco" and the problem with trying to make the "definitive" version of a fairy tale. Enjoy the show![audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep94-the_big_D23.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #94: "The Big D23"]

We Farley Knew Ye
We finally got to see what Chris Farley's SHREK would've been like in an early story reel which surfaced this week. His passing in 1997 was a big shock to us so there's a lot of discussion surrounding this topic this week. But that's not all because there's a "Bob the Builder" reboot with a new character design who looks... symmetrical, a new Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show coming to Netflix which is 2D (!) and the rights have been secured to make a Dungeons & Dragons movie. That last story also contains the skit this week is Stephen reading excerpts from Ice-T's description of his experience recording the D&D audio book (starting at 1:03:24)... so enjoy that! There are technical discussions as well surrounding the new Windows 10 and a blog post which tried (and failed) to properly compare the budgets of live-action VFX to that of fully CG Animated Films. The questions this week comes from a listener wondering if we're going to CTNx this year, which ticket we bought, and if that's right for her. This is another 2hr podcast so let us keep you entertained while you trudge through the middle of another work-week![audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep93-we_farley_knew_ye.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #93: "We Farley Knew Ye"]

PEZ not PES
TMNT is getting a 2D animated special from Titmouse Inc, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" Disney XD series shows some serious action with its new trailer and Chinese animation shows it's on the rise in a big way with "Rock Dog." There were also two passings we mention this week: wrestler and actor "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and animation historian and reporter John Culhane. In other news, apparently there's a PEZ movie coming (PEZ like the candy not PES the animator... which would be fascinating and wanted). Also, Stephen is back from traveling and as such is in front of a nice sounding mic instead of the patchwork sounds of the tablet you heard for the last few weeks. Enjoy the crisp cool sounds of jet lag![audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep92-PEZ_not_PES.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #92: "PEZ not PES"]

Young Funny, Old Money
The Good Dinosaur trailer, roll of cartoons in kids' lives and an Emoji movie is being developed.

Exit 73 Studios Interview
Interview with creaters of COIN and BOLTRON NINJA MASSACRE, Chris Burns and Bob Fox of Exit 73 Studios.

San Diego Comic Kanye West
Comic Con was this weekend and we try to cover the MANY stories that came from that: trailers, movie/series announcements, crossover comics, etc. Not to mention the stories that came out during the week not linked to the event like Harry Shearer coming back to "The Simpsons." I'm also still on the road, so I've left Rob back in NY for a trip out to the IL where I am recording with Pat in his house... or as Rob like's to call it, "The Ryan's Den!" It's a pretty energetic episode this week so enjoy the excitement -- I hope it's contagious.[audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep89-san_diego_comic_kanye_west.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #89: "San Diego Comic Kanye West"]

You're a Shark, Harry
There are some amazing fan art topics this week! The BARTKIRA trailer was finally posted, Ave Espelita created a CGI tribute to Samurai Jack and Andrew Kaiko illustrates an INSIDE OUT / LOONEY TUNES mashup! We also talk about a classic Disney attraction closing at what used to be MGM and a discussion about the new Boomerang shows preview images response. Happy Wednesday! Here... have a podcast.[audio:http://traffic.libsyn.com/rubberonion/the_rubber_onion-ep88-youre_a_shark_harry.mp3|titles=The Rubber Onion - #88: "You're a Shark, Harry"]
